Comet was introduced to the public in March of 1960, with 116,330 1960 Comets being produced. The Comet was originally to be part of the new Edsel division, but when Ford decided to cut losses and pull the plug on Edsel, the Comet would be introduced and sold by the Lincoln-Mercury division. 1960 Comet would not carry the Edsel, or the Mercury name, but was only badged as a Comet.
