The Comet moved from the Falcon platform to the new Ford Fairlane platform for 1966, placing it in the mid-size status. The Caliente was Mercury's sporty top of the line Comet for 1966. Caliente came standard with bucket seats and a 289/ohv V-8 engine.
The Cyclone was a distinctive sport series that was not typically refered to with the Comet name in front of it. The standard engine for Cyclone was a 289 V-8 with 200 bhp. Mid-year Cyclone GT models would be fitted with a 390/ohv V-8 producing 265-335 bhp. The 1966 model year Production numbers for Cyclone and Cyclone GT were, Cyclone hardtop coupe 6,889 and Cyclone convertible 1,305. Cyclone GT coupe 13,812. and Cyclone GT convertible 2,158 units.
