For 1959, the British built Met, has a trunk lid and vent wing windows added to the body. A new Austin built 55-bhp engine is under the hood, with the 52-bhp engine still available as an option. Met sales grow, with 20,435 units shipped to the United States. Among the import segment, only Volkswagen out sells Metropolitan. View more about the Met in our Metropolitan Timeline.
In November of 1954, Romney created the Hudson Special Products Division, hoping to gain large government contracts. The Mighty Mite Jeep was built in the Detroit Hudson plant, after production of the Hudson line was moved to the Nash plant. The Mighty Mite had an aluminum air-cooled 55-bhp engine, water-proof ignition, and an aluminum body. This factory photo of a Mighty Mite Jeep with George Romney, is like the 3,922 produced for the U. S. Marines in the old Hudson plant between 1960 and 1963.
This video clip shows the Mighty Mite in action. You can see how the 1,700 pound jeep could be easily air dropped by helicopter to a combat zone.
This raw color video clip has no sound and could have been used to create a promo, with dialogue added later.
