Roy Abernethy
In 1962, George Romney leaves American Motors to become the Governor of Michigan. Roy Abernethy takes the helm as CEO of American Motors Corporation in February of 1962. For the next five years, Abernethy will work to undo the economy car image Romney has built. AMC drops back to forth place in sales for 1962. A trend of decline under new management will influence the board of directors to vote Abernethy out in 1967. With a long career in the auto industry, Abernethy had also worked at Packard, and Willys-Overland.

The wheelbase on Ambassador was shortened from 117-inches to 108-inches, the same as the Classic. Ambassador was the only Rambler with the V-8 option for 1962. 36,171 Rambler Ambassadors were built.
