The Mustang 1 was shown to the public October 6, 1962. The first experimental Mustang would become the foundation for the Ford GT-40.
The first Ford Mustang (Mustang 1) started out as a two seat sports car. The Mustang II was soon developed into one of the most successful production cars in history.
The Mustang was designated at Ford in the early years as the T-5 Project. The T5 went from concept to a production Mustang in 20 months. The T5 project would now be shown to the public, badged as the Mustang II. Ford sent the Mustang II on tours to see how the public would respond.
