Shortly after the introduction of the Mustang, it was selected to pace the 1964 Indianapolis 500. Ford produced a total of 37 pace cars for track and official use for the famous raceway, of which 3 convertibles that were to perform actual track duty at the 500, were extensively modified. Ford sent these three Mustang convertibles to North Carolina, to long time racing contractor Holman Moody, for the modifications to tolerate the rigors of the raceway duty. Those 3 cars received a warmed over 289 with four-speed manual transmission, and a unique suspension designed and built by the racing legend.
