Ford introduced the 1984 Mustang on September 22, 1983. Production for the U.S. market was 129,621.
In 1981, Ford created the Special Vehicles Operation department, to develop special limited-edition hign-performance vehicles. The new SVO Mustang introduced for 1984 was the first of these vehicles to go into production. SVO was targeted at more affluent consumers, and magazines like Road and Track gave the new Mustang SVO great reviews, compared to foriegn cars costing much more.
